Vol. 2, Issue 1
Spring 2021

It is Spring! A year since our first newsletter, when we were anticipating second waves and staycations. We'll take vaccine and cicada anticipation instead, thanks. And photography! We're finally photographing completed work again! Watch for that in the next issue.

The More the Merrier

Spring is a time of growth! We have hired a Senior Designer! Susan Rudd is a familiar name in the Bloomington design scene in her own right, and we are so excited to add her to our team at SYH. We really needed another Susan, and she is one of the best Susans around. You can learn more about her on our staff page.

What We've Been Digging

Green - Alright. Our obsession with green isn't really new. But have we mentioned that it is SPRING? Inspired by all the hopefulness around us, especially this particular Spring, we've been working on

Natural Stone - We owe you a Design Tip Monday post about different countertop options, don't we? Meanwhile, we are jazzed over here after a day trip to Granite America and Italy Marble & Granite to hunt for the perfect slab for a kitchen backsplash in a gut remodel / addition project that will break ground late summer. (You can also swing by Quality Surfaces and D&L Granite.) Here's the big lesson for slab hunting: keep your eyes on the prize. Like art, the right piece of stone could be the anchor point for a design; but if you already have direction, stick to it! Don't get distracted by the stunning beauty of nature and forget the context in which your stone will live. We went for something with a rich black field and just a touch of movement, and ended up so excited about Black Storm and Titanium Gold granites. But come on! that pink North American granite! and the Mercury White Dolomite! and how about that Verde Fusion! It's Van Gogh in stone. Be still our hearts.

Local Vendor Spotlight: Jeff's Warehouse

By now everybody knows that there is beauty in owning both old and new. All new is meh, let's be honest—and not nearly as environmentally conscientious as vintage. Enter Jeff Scofield. Nobody does vintage like Jeff. We have scored gorgeous pieces nosing around this treasure trove. We even borrow things from his shop (and home!) for photoshoots—because Jeff is not just a thoughtful collector but a generous human. If you're not following him on Instagram, you are Missing. Out. But honestly? put down the phone, and find an afternoon to swing by.

Midland Arts and Antiques

Not quite local, but not too far! You needed to go to Indy to hit Trader Joe's anyway, right? Midland is your quintessential  antique mall. Go on a full stomach because you're going to be there a while. (Luckily, there are great restaurants nearby - like King Dough! Which we miss so much! Come back to the square, King Dough!) Follow Midland on Instagram to see the latest finds, and when you go, take a wad of cash, because it will win you discounts.

Project on the Horizon?

If you have a new build, renovation, and/or decorating project on the horizon, call us sooner than you think you need us please! We want to work with you! But we've still got a waitlist.

Initial consultations happen within a few weeks of your call, during which Susan meets with you to see your space, hear all your hopes and hangups, and offer off-the-cuff feedback and advice to help you determine next steps. If the next step for you is comprehensive design services, we pencil you in and launch your project as soon as your name rises to the top.
