unionville family central
rooted in history, built for family
Project overview
This forever home has family legacy woven into its very foundation—literally. The husband grew up here, in a house built decades ago by his father and grandfather. When he and his wife approached us about retiring on this cherished property, the original plan was to renovate. After careful study, however, it became clear: starting fresh would be better for the long-term comfort and flexibility they envisioned. The decision was made: the old home came down. In its exact footprint, a new one rose—practical, welcoming, and deeply rooted in its past.
Client description
These Michigan-based clients were warm, funny, and crystal clear about what they wanted: a home that made everyday life easy, but also wooed their five grown children home. Single-floor living was essential—for themselves and several full-time furry residents—but so was guest space, room to gather, and space to play. (They’ve got a hidden speakeasy in the basement that’s fully wired and laid out—they just haven’t built it yet. They're fun like that. And, finally, empty nesters.)
Design solutions
The first level is set up for aging in place, with the primary suite, kitchen, laundry, and all main living areas easily accessible. A half-story above holds two bedrooms and a full bath for visiting kids, and the finished basement includes a family room, kitchenette, three more bedrooms, a bathroom that serves the pool, another laundry room, and yes—that future speakeasy. Outside, the backyard was designed for entertaining, complete with pool, firepit, and an expansive deck. But the most sacred element of the design program? A sprawling childhood climbing tree that everything was built around. Some things, after all, are non-negotiable.
Outcomes & testimonials
As the couple prepares to move from Michigan, the house is already doing its job—inviting people in. Rooted in history, built for the future, and designed with warmth, humor, and a whole lot of intention, this home is ready for whatever comes next. The climbing tree now shades a new generation—and stands as a perfect symbol of what this project was always about: continuity, connection, and coming home.
