WESTSIDE UNDERESTORY

Project overview - During the pandemic, two coastal transplants unexpectedly became  Bloomington transplants. Their century-old home on the Near West Side charmed them above ground, but hid unrealized potential below. With contractor Jim Wright-Kaiser, we transformed a rough, underutilized basement — including a cramped former apartment with a particularly unfortunate bathroom — into a retreat that effectively doubled their living space. This basement renovation presented the perfect opportunity to honor history while introducing fresh design elements that reflect the homeowners' journey and sensibilities.

Client description - These clients were en route from California to Brooklyn when they stopped to visit a friend in Bloomington. Something about our quirky, creative town captured their hearts, and because their jobs were remote-friendly, they decided to plant new roots right here in the Midwest. When we met them, their upstairs living space already showcased their distinctive style—colorful, plant-filled, and full of personality. They asked us to help  their downstairs match their upstairs in both function and soul.

Design solutions - Our transformation focused on creating a dialogue between the home's historic character and the clients' colorful aesthetic. We intentionally exposed the original limestone walls—a quintessential Bloomington architectural feature—alongside new warm ground aggregate concrete floors that feel both modern and timeless. The star of the show might be the expansive natural maple bookshelves crafted by local artisans at Stoll's Woodworking, which provide the perfect backdrop for the homeowners' impressive collection of books and art. Two completely custom bathrooms bring fresh functionality to the space—one serving an ensuite bedroom and another cleverly connecting a laundry room with a small but mighty home office. Throughout the design, we maintained clean lines and neutral backgrounds that allow the clients' artistic sensibilities to take center stage.

Outcomes & testimonials - The resulting basement is a layered, inviting retreat that feels both connected to the century-old charm of the home above and distinct in its own right. What was once avoided is now a sought-after space, doubling this home's living area with rooms that serve multiple purposes—work, rest, creativity, and gathering. The exposed limestone walls tell the home's age-old story, while the modern design elements write its next chapter.
