Hi-Level Bi-Level

Project Overview: This split-level renovation in Bloomington transformed a dated bi-level into a unique and unexpectedly dramatic home, through strategic architectural intervention and interior design innovation.

Client Description: After a year of considering, with SYH, whether and how much to renovate their bi-level, or just move to a new home, these clients chose to bloom where they were already planted. They opted to invest in the house they had and make it a home they really loved. They prioritized the kitchen and main living areas, where they spend most of their time.

Design Solutions: Our architectural team dramatically reinvented the main living space with strategic ceiling and wall removal and the addition of clerestory windows. A stunning 4-panel sliding door system onto a deck replaced separate doors in different rooms, creating a California-inspired indoor-outdoor connection. The central custom screen serves triple duty: displaying art, concealing HVAC, and providing structural support. The renovation features a new gas fireplace with custom shelving and a reimagined kitchen anchored by a spacious island, custom cabinetry, and honed quartz countertops. Design choices honor the home's 1967 origins while, of course, injecting modern functionality.

Outcomes: This project, transforming an ordinary bi-level into a distinctive contemporary home, showcases our expertise in split-level renovation. Split-levels like this one are ubiquitous throughout  Central Indiana and the greater Midwest, and ripe for remodeling. Our thoughtful combination of natural materials, medium-toned wood, and horizontal design elements respects the home's mid-century roots while creating spaces perfect for modern living.
