Years ago, we wrote a blog post embracing theses utilitarian, midcentury boxes that are known across the country by a variety of names: bi-, tri-, and quad-levels, back-splits, and our favorite, the splanch.

Open Plan

The main floor of a split level is ripe for renovation without touching the more contained bedrooms, baths, or other level(s). The Open Plan Downloadable includes two layouts (plus mirror-image versions) tailored for bi-levels versus tri- or quad-levels, so you can apply them to your home regardless of orientation. This perennial favorite opens the kitchen, dining, and living spaces into a seamless layout by removing central walls—creating light-filled, connected public areas.

Closed Plan

Prefer to keep things contained? The Closed Plan Downloadable also includes two layouts (plus mirror-image versions) for bi-levels and tri-/quad-levels, but reimagines the main floor without knocking down walls.
